Poster Design

Assignment Requirements

(40 points)

For this project you will play the role of a graphic designer.  When a client hires a graphic designer to make a poster, the client likes to pick from multiple options.  You will design 2-3 posters for the same subject/event.  Clients will often give graphic designers certain themes or guidelines to follow.  You will be randomly assigned a certain theme or guideline for the first poster which you must follow (e.g., only using analogous colors with a winter theme).  The other poster(s) you may design however you chose to.  Try to make the other poster(s) as different as you can from the first poster.

We will be using the ArtStudio app to digitally create the posters.

Subject

YOU decide what the poster subject is.  Here are some ideas!

  • Poster for a school group, organization, or event

    • MHS Toy Drive (Dec. 15th)

    • Coffee House (Dec. 19th, 6:30pm)

    • MHS Holiday Concert (Dec. 11th, 7:30pm)

  • Poster for a band/concert

  • Public service poster

    • Red Cross

    • Public Safety

    • Cancer Awareness

    • AIDS Prevention/Awareness

    • Humane Society / Animal Cruelty

Design

You need to think about the layout of your poster

(from Robin's Principles of Design)

  • Size: horizontal (1500 X 1200 pixels) or vertical (1200 X 1500 pixels)

  • Proximity: group related items together

  • Alignment: balance & composition is essential! Use the rule of thirds!

  • Repetition: Repeat some aspect of the design throughout the entire poster

  • Contrast: If two items are not exactly the same, make them different!

  • Color (primary, black and white, analogous, complementary, ect.)

  • Typography: the importance and readability of text, font style and size

Information

You want to include all of the necessary information a viewer needs to understand what you want to express.  For example, if you are making a poster for an event, you need to include information about why the event is being held and when and where the event is.

You need to turn in the Poster Planning Handout before you start designing your posters.

You will also be graded on the following:

  • Careful attention to detail

  • Clean edges

  • Elements are seamlessly integrated.

Effort

  • Always on task in class.

  • Pushed the limits of the assignment.
